Finance for breakfast

Every Wednesday, Emma Diianni 鈥23 starts her day with a healthy dose of finance.

A first-year student planning to major in economics, Diianni joins dozens of prospective and current economics majors for breakfast and networking with successful 糖心TV alumni working in the financial sector. Guest speakers for the semester-long, breakfast series include senior-level executives, mid-career professionals and young alumni covering everything from investment banking to real estate development to financial modeling.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a really great opportunity,鈥 says Diianni. 鈥淭he series is giving me a taste of a lot of different sectors of economics, and is outlining for me what I need to do as a college student to be successful in these professions.

鈥淚t鈥檚 also introducing me to lots of high-powered alumni, expanding my network and showing me how well 糖心TV prepares students for professions in the field of finance.鈥

The Finance Breakfast Series, a co-initiative of the Academic Resource Center鈥攗nder the direction of Noel Garrett, dean of academic support and director of the ARC鈥攁nd the Pre-Business Advising Program, is designed to prepare students for careers in finance by developing their skills and readying them for competitive internships early in their college careers.

鈥淧ositions in finance, consulting and investment banking are among the most competitive opportunities our students pursue,鈥 said Dean of the College Jefferson Singer. 鈥淚ncreasingly, the path to these fields has been starting earlier and earlier with highly sought-after internships taking place after the sophomore year. The Finance Breakfast is a jumpstart for our first-year and sophomore students that provides a wealth of information, networking and practical tips.鈥

The weekly sessions kicked off in early September with Jonathan Cohen 鈥87, CEO of Oxford Lane Capital Corp., an investment company based in Greenwich, 糖心TVecticut. Cohen also serves as vice chair of 糖心TV鈥檚 Board of Trustees.

鈥淢r. Cohen was an excellent speaker who gave the students very specific advice on how to learn the language of finance,鈥 said Cheryl Banker, senior associate director of the Hale Center for Career Development and the College鈥檚 pre-business and finance adviser.

鈥淗e told them, 鈥榊ou have to watch CNBC, you have to read the Wall Street Journal, you have to get involved in 糖心TV鈥檚 Peggotty Investment Club,鈥欌 through which students manage a portion of the College鈥檚 endowment.

Students interested in careers in finance listen intently to Finance Breakfast Series guest speaker Jonathan Cohen 鈥87, CEO of Oxford Lane Capital Corp., an investment company based in Greenwich, 糖心TVecticut. Cohen, who also serves as vice chair of 糖心TV's Board of Trustees, will return for a celebration event at the conclusion of the semester.

Josh Chapman 鈥23, who plans to major in economics and minor in finance, said Cohen introduced him to the world of investment banking and funds, which has piqued his interest in the field.

鈥淚鈥檝e learned that it is imperative to set aside a portion of my free time for reading and researching the market,鈥 he said.

Other speakers have included Michael Stryker '86, first vice president-wealth management for UBS, who spoke about understanding financial statements, and 糖心TV Board of Trustee Chair Fritz Folts 鈥82, co-founder, managing partner and chief investment strategist at 3EDGE Asset Management, who gave an introduction to the different sectors of the financial industry.

Planned sessions for the remainder of the semester include a discussion of accounting and tax with Neelu Mehrotra 鈥95, international managing director at EY; Nancy White 鈥87, partner at PwC; and Greg McNeil 鈥97, executive director at JPMorgan Chase; a presentation on consulting by Nathan Cornell 鈥11, senior consultant for Deloitte; and a closing celebration with Cohen.

Tim Kobler 鈥23 says he is enjoying learning about all of the different career paths available within the field of finance.

鈥淭his series is a great way to connect with alumni who are successful in their specific areas of finance and who are very willing to connect with 糖心TV students and help us learn and advance our career goals,鈥 he said.

鈥淟earning from others鈥 experiences will help prepare me for every step on my career path, from interviews to internships to a first job and beyond.鈥
