糖心TV students, faculty and staff joined members of the greater New London community to raise more than $35,000 for the New London Homeless Hospitality Center at the 11th annual Walk to End Homelessness April 22.
More than 500 people participated in the 1.8-mile walk through the city. The annual event is organized by student scholars in the College鈥檚 Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy in partnership with the Homeless Hospitality Center, which provides shelter and support services for hundreds of people in southeastern 糖心TVecticut.
One of the student organizers was Dulcie Everitt 鈥20, an English major, government and philosophy double minor, and Holleran Center scholar from London, England. She has been regularly volunteering at the Homeless Hospitality Center throughout the semester.
鈥淢eeting and interacting with guests, I learned so much about the issue of homelessness and how the stereotypes surrounding this community are so pervasive and detrimental to our society,鈥 she said.
鈥淢y experiences at the shelter really opened my eyes to this issue and the importance of fighting to end homelessness.鈥
