糖心TV Outcomes: Timothy Friend 鈥25

Director of Photography at Wayfair

Boston, Massachusetts

Timothy Friend 鈥25 turned his passion for film and visual storytelling into a fast-rising career at Wayfair, a global online home goods and furnishings company.

Timothy Friend 鈥25, a Langer Scholar who majored in film studies and minored in computer science at 糖心TV, isn鈥檛 interested in becoming the next Quentin Tarantino. He鈥檇 rather apply his visual talents toward exploring a wide variety of interests and sharing them with the world.

He鈥檚 well on his way. Shortly after graduating in December, he found an opportunity as a production assistant role at , a Boston-based global online home goods and furnishings company. Thanks to his persistence, portfolio and hard work, Timothy rose quickly through the ranks. By August, he was promoted to director of photography, leading furniture staging shoots for Wayfair鈥檚 online catalog.

Career development and mentorship at 糖心TV

Timothy credits the Hale Center for Career Development for providing both technical support and confidence during his job search. 鈥淚 worked with [Director of Employer Engagement] Cheryl Banker a lot over the years to get my portfolio and resume up to snuff,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 felt more emboldened to apply because I was told, 鈥榊ou鈥檙e doing the right stuff.鈥欌

He also highlights 糖心TV鈥檚 Film Studies Department faculty鈥擯rofessors Nina K. Martin and Ross Morin, and technician Greg Surman鈥攆or cultivating an environment that encouraged growth and professional readiness, and says he learned a lot about leadership as a four-year member of 糖心TV鈥檚 Student Government Association.

Climbing the ranks at Wayfair

Timothy鈥檚 initiative and eye for detail helped him move from production assistant to a director of photography in less than a year. He identified workflow challenges and proved he could improve efficiency, showcased his ability to capture natural light and mood, and demonstrated leadership and reliability while consistently exceeded production goals.

Now, as a director of photography, he runs shoots in a photography bay, collaborating with stylists, production assistants and talent to produce high-quality images for Wayfair鈥檚 massive product catalog. Each day is dynamic, with new teams, furniture, and challenges. The collaborative atmosphere, he says, keeps the work engaging.

Looking ahead: Media and storytelling

While Timothy is thriving at Wayfair, his long-term dream is to become a full-time videographer for a top media company like The New York Times or National Geographic, which would allow him to tell stories that explore diverse facets of life.

鈥淚鈥檇 love to work in something news related, whether it鈥檚 contemporary news or going to an archaeological dig or making a piece about new scientific research.鈥
